I usually see Irish Rose patterns written with 8 petals. Because of my balloon decorating background I'm fond of odd numbers, so I tend to make mine with 7 petals as long as it works for the pattern. The big flower with 4 colors is 8 petals, the others are not.
R1 Color 1 start with a magic or sliding ring ch 1, * sc in ring, ch 3. Repeat from * 7 more times. Join with a sl st to first sc (8 ch-3 loops)
R2 Color 1 Ch 1, (sc, 5 dc, sc) in each ch-3 loop around, join. (8 petals)
R3 Color 2 * Ch 5, working behind the petals, sl st between next 2 petals, repeat from * around. (8 ch-5 loops)
R4 Color 2 Ch 1, (sc, 7 dc, sc) in each loop around, join.(8 Petals)
R 5 Color 3 * Ch 7, working behind petals, sl st between next 2 petals, rep from * around. (8 ch-7 loops)
R6 Color 3 Ch 1, (sc, 9 dc, sc) in each lp around, join.
R 7 Color 1* Ch 7, working behind petals, sl st between next 2 petals, rep from * around (8 ch-7 loops)
R8 Color 1 Ch 1, (sc, 11 dc, sc) in each loop around, join.
